Description:

J. F. Oberlin’s Service Learning Center was established in 2011. The major components of service learning – study, doing, reflecting, action report – are incorporated in SL classes. The SLC can also introduce other community service and volunteer activities.

The RJ Small Enterprises in Japan Class (spring) and Global Communication: Cross-Cultural Marketing in Small Enterprises Class (fall) concentrate on the pressure on small independent mom-and-pop type stores by large chain big boxes. After learning about the historical development and current status of small enterprises in Japan, students become involved with the shopping arcade community in and around Fuchinobe Station near J. F. Oberlin. Students help the small enterprise owners develop marketing plans, community activities, and other services to insure their survival.

Other Service Learning classes are taught in Japanese.

Housing AND MEALS:

Students will be housed in either one of the residence halls or the conference center. A free shuttle bus provides transportation to the main campus. Students will have a host family one weekend during their stay. Students are responsible for their own meals. Pointers on how to eat less expensively in Japan will be covered during orientation. Students should be able to manage on about ¥75,000 for meals, incidentals, and fun for the five weeks.

Program fee: ¥253,000 for affiliates; ¥275,000 for non-affiliates.
Housing fee for single room: ¥55,000.
Housing fee for double room: ¥40,500.
Airport pick-up/return, housing, tuition, 2 excursions, guest speakers, weekend host family included.

Who can Apply:

Students from J. F. Oberlin University’s affiliates are given priority, but others are also invited to apply. Students are expected to have completed at least one year of university Japanese at their home institution. Maximum number: 20.

桜美林大学の提携校に在籍している学生を優先としますが、提携校外からの申請も受け付けています。在籍校で、最低1年の大学レベル日本語教育を修了している学生に限ります。 最大20名まで。

I joined the Judo Club because it is a lot of fun and a way to practice my Japanese.
